Several variants were built to explore the anti-tank role and artillery support task. This version, equipped with a 20 mm gun was the first one to be used by reconnaissance units. In 1940 already, a battalion consisting of 3 to 4 companies each equipped with 52 motorcycles with sidecars and 4 motorcycles was integrated into the motorized infantry and the armo-red divisions. Moreover, motorcycles were present in nearly all other Wehrmacht units, especially with the reconaissance units and the command, as well as the pioneer and the supply units.more.. | |

The Panzer IV was developed during the opening months of World War Two to equip German armoured divisions with a tank having a 7.5 cm cannon. Given the shortcomings of the previous Panzer III equipped with a 5 cm gun (often in difficulty against the Soviet T34 with its 5 cm gun and highly effective armour), it also featured enhanced protection. The Mark IV was used extensively by the German Army on all fronts during the Second World War: numerous variants were produced to counter the constant improvements made to enemy tanks.

The aim was to build a vehicle to supply ammunition, food and materials – stored in the holds of transport ships – to invading troops occupying beachheads on enemy soil immediately after landing. The DUKW offered good navigating qualities and could move well off-road too, which, combined with its high load capacity, enabled it to perform its logistic role to the full. In the post-war years, it was widely used by USA’s allies all the way through to the 70s, including civil protection assignments.

 more | Italeri 1/35 Autobilnda AB41 Armoured Car (6442)
Officially presented at the opening of FIAT’s Mirafiori plant in May 1939 the AB 40 was at the time something of a cutting-edge vehicle. Thanks to innovative solutions such as double drive and spare wheels mounted as neutral to help get over obstacles, it was a match for any foreign rival in the same class. The AB 41 version introduced in 1941 included several improvements, yet its main weapon a 20 mm Breda 35 cannon remained the same. Capable of over 70 Kph on the road and nearly 40 Kph off road (twice that of other vehicles in the Regio Esercito), it proved effective in combat despite the defects caused by use of poor materials in the armour and the complex 4-wheel steering system. It was later replaced by the improved AB 43 version. A total of around 450 AB41s were built.

Made for the British army this self-propelled antiaircraft gun was built around the chassis of the Crusader tank, which half-way through the Second World War had become obsolete and was unable to contend with modern enemy tanks. It was decided to transform the remaining Crusaders into self-propelled antiaircraft guns by fitting them with new turrets equipped with two 20 mm cannons. This antiaircraft Crusader of which few were produced, was then used by the British in Europe to protect armoured divisions and troops.

 more | Italeri 1/35 Autobilnda AB43 Armoured Car (6451)
The AB 43 armoured car is an evolution from the previous AB 40 and 41 models. Equipped with a new larger turret, its main weapon was the 20MM calibre Breda 35 with a co-axial 8MM machine gun. Unfortunately the AB 43 never entered into service with the Italian army as its production was only started in 1944 under the control of the German forces, which had occupied the Italian industry following the armistice in September 1943. These vehicles were distributed to many German units operating at the Italian front and were used particularly for controls and by the police in the northern regions which was subject to great partisan resistance. The few examples that survived were used by the police to maintain public order after the war.

more | Italeri 1/35 Camionetta AS 42 Sahariana Italian Armoured Car Kit (6452)
The model 42 Desert Vehicle was developed for the Italian Army based on the chassis and mechanics of the AB 41 armoured car. Over the course of the operations on the African front the need arose for a reconnaissance vehicle specially adapted to the desert conditions, where driving on sand required particular features (large size tyres at low pressure, height from the ground, extensive autonomy) that were not present on the currently available vehicles. The engineers eliminated the dual running direction typical of the AB 41 and the four-wheel drive. The vehicle was produced in two armament configurations: one with 20 mm cannon/machine gun and the other with 47/32 anti-tank cannon. Several dozen of these vehicles were produced after the fall of the African front, the remaining AS 42s were re-deployed in Italy, ending their career in the police force in the 1950s.

As the Volkswagen "82" (K'U'beiwagen) proved very successful during the campaign in Poland, it was necessary to produce ever increasing numbers of this vehicle. Later, Ferdinand Porsche developed an amphibian version of this car, called the "Schwimmwagen" The light weight of this vehicle (about 112 ton) permitted crossing of muddy areas, since only two men were sufficient to keep this vehicle moving. For reconnaissance and liaison missions, water had to be crossed frequently, which was impossible with other vehicles. The Schwimmwagen, built as an amphibious vehicle, was able to master almost any obstacle.
