At the beginning of the sixties therefore, Ford UK, based on the sports activities of the parent company. So in 1962 Walter Hayes, the then PR director at Ford UK, met with Colin Chapman the founder of Lotus Engineering. Hayes persuaded Chapman to fit an engine modified by Lotus into 1000 Cortinas in order to take part in Group 2 races. The Lotus Cortina equipped with a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine went into production in January 1963. Thanks to its convincing power and easy handling the "British answer to the Shelby Mustang" very quickly looked forward to success in races and rallies. James Clark, known as Jim, born in 1936 in Kilmany, Scotland, began his career in 1955 as a member of the Ecurie Agricole rally team. He achieved his first win in 1957 in a Porsche 1600 Super. After various wins in England and Belgium, in 1959 he drove a formula car for the first time. In 1960 the young Scot was launched on his soaring Formula I career, driving exclusively for Lotus and becoming overall World Champion in 1963 and 1965. In the mid sixties he also moved to different sports cars, including the Lotus Cortina, which he drove with great success in 22 races. In 1968 the unassuming Jim Clark, died in a tragic accident, but he is still regarded as one of the best racing drivers of all time.
